• PKP Intercity to spend millions on rolling stock refurb
  • 05.04.2011
Over one thousand carriages are to be refurbished by PKP Intercity this year for a sum amounting to 196 million zloty (49 million euro).

“We still do not have enough rolling stock that are in line with customers’ expectations,” the newly instated PKP Intercity chairman, Janusz Malinowski told the PAP news agency.

Currently, around 1,120 PKP Intercity carriages travel along Poland’s rail network daily, a rise of 100 wagons since December.

However, not all of the rail operator’s rolling stock is up for refurbishment, with around 1,000 out of all 3,124 carriages belonging to the company liable for scrapping, according to Malinowski.

“These are very old and worn out units and their repair is unprofitable […]. If we manage to scrap 500 carriages this year, I’ll be pleased,” Malinowski said. (jb)
