• Cheap taxis given the boot
  • 07.04.2011

Unlicensed taxis are set to disappear from Poland's streets as new legislation is set to tackle carriers which offer minicab services and which in practice offer no meter or carriage licence.

The move will come as cheery news to professional taxi drivers and corporations, who have long resented being undercut by the amateur drivers.

However, the new laws will not come into affect for another year, allowing those who want to make a career as taxi-drivers the opportunity to do train up for legitimate qualifications.

Under the new regulations, the so-called “occasional” ferrying of passengers will only be feasible for vehicles that can carry more than seven passengers, including the driver. It remains to be seen whether advantages will be taken of this loophole in the law. (nh/jb)
