• May holiday to boost economy?
  • 29.04.2011
With over a million Poles planning to prolong the May holidays until the end of next week, Poland’s domestic tourism industry holds high hopes of bumper profits over the coming days.

According to a survey published in Friday’s Rzeczpospolita daily, over a million Poles are planning to take days off work until Sunday week, with many deciding to remain in the country during the holiday period.

Research from the Tourism Institute also shows that Poles decide on taking short breaks not far from home and for one night only.

Poland’s economy is set to gain from the holidaymakers, with the tourism, catering, transport and fuel industry set to benefit most from the upcoming break.

However, the trade industry is set to fall, as shops are closed on 1 and 3 May. Production will also drop, although the Rzeczpospolita daily comments that many employers have learnt how to deal with long weekends, organising work around the days off so as to offset a loss in productivity. (jb)
