Poland's foreign minister Radoslaw Sikorski is being considered as a candidate for  the post of NATO Secretary-General and his chances are not lost - said Mariusz Handzlik from the Presidential Chancellery commenting on the reports that Danish PM Anders Fogh Rasmussen is the most certain candidate for the job. Reuters, citing American diplomatic sources, reported earlier that the United States already endorsed the Danish politician.

Speaking in Brussels today Handzlik reiterated that president Lech Kaczynski will continue lobbying for Mr. Sikorski.  'As for what we keep hearing on the subject - information appearing in the media is one thing while talks which are underway in diplomatic circles is yet another. I think  these are two different realities. There is support for Mr. Sikorski and I think he still has big chances of being chosen for the post. Not all is lost and we hope for the best'.

Commentators in Brussels, however, point out that the American support is of key importance while candidates not backed by the US administration have slim chances of getting the post. Rasmussen's candidacy has reportedly been supported by Great Britain, France and Germany as well.  Radoslaw Sikorski, who has never officially confirmed running for the post, declined to comment.
