There was no deal between Poland and Italy in respect of the candidature to the head of the European Parliament, say Polish politicians after Italy’s Silvio Berlusconi announced the candidature of Mario Mauro and suggested Poland was withdrawing the candidature of Jerzy Buzek in response to Rome’s support of Warsaw’s candidate to the Council of Europe.
Head of ruling Civic Platform’s parliamentary caucus Zbigniew Chlebowski said that it was Italian lobbying of their own candidate but added that he believed it was the candidate of the European People’s Party who would take the function and that would be Jerzy Buzek.
