• World Water Day observed in Poland
  • 22.03.2009

The head of the Polish Humanitarian Organization (PAH) Janina Ochojska has called on Poles to save water and thus help countries suffering from its shortage. Today marks the World Water Day with the participation of many Polish NGOs, including the Polish Humanitarian Organization.

Speaking for Polish Radio Ochojska reminded that water recourses on Earth are limited and appealed to Poles for its reasonable use. 'Water resources which we regard as vast are, in fact, very small. Only 1% of water available worldwide is good for drinking. We are not aware of the fact that water is our treasure. If we tried to survive having only 10 liters of water at their disposal a day just like the inhabitants of Mozambique then we would finally realize that we often use water unnecessarily'.

According to statistics, an average Pole uses from 200 to 300 liters of water per day. The World Water Day was first formally proposed in the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development  in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Observance began in 1993.
