• President of Hungary Laszlo Solyom in Poland
  • 23.03.2009

President of Hungary Laszlo Solyom arrived with a two-day official visit to Poland, meeting with President Lech Kaczyński.

The main topics of discussion with the Polish President were the presence of Poland and Hungary in NATO and the EU, the future of the Visehrad Group, as well as the financial crisis. Both presidents underlined that the visit was symbolical because of the Polish-Hungarian friendship day celebrated today in both countries.

For the third time, March 23rd is celebrated as Polish-Hungarian friendship day.

Poland and Hungary historically have enjoyed good relations outside the political context.

In 2007 the Polish Parliament established March 23rd a Day of Polish-Hungarian Friendship among others to commemorate Polish-Hungarian king Stefan Batory, General Józef Bem who fought for Hungarian freedom and Polish support for the Hungarian uprising in 1956.

On the second day of the visit tomorrow, the Polish and Hungarian presidents go to Krosno, where a special ceremony is scheduled to commemorate Hungarian cities which took in Polish refugees in 1939.
