• Miners' strike imminent
  • 26.03.2009

Miners working for the Kompania Węglowa, Poland’s biggest mine owner and operator, have decided to strike.

The announcement comes after trade unions voted for the industrial action, stating that there was “no other option”.

Dominik Kolorz, head of the miners’ Solidarity Trade Union, said in an interview with Polish Radio that the frequency of voters was much higher now than ever. Almost 60 percent of the 65,000 employees voted in yesterday’s referendum, with a 90 percent vote in favour of industrial action.

Decisions over the date and type of strike are to be taken tomorrow, Friday. Trade unionists are demanding a 9 percent pay rise, with Kompania Węglowa offering half that.
