Discussing Polish-US relations in a Channel One debate on Polish Radio politicians of the ruling and opposition parties agreed that there remains a number of vital bilateral issues in need of consultation with American partners.

Despite that, deputy head of the Presidential Office Wladyslaw Stasiak said his bureau has not been seeking an eye to eye meeting of the two countries’ presidents during NATO’s 60th anniversary summit. Minister Stasiak explained that the anniversary gathering of the Alliance would not necessarily be the best opportunity for such talks. He added the Polish delegation should focus on key policy matters of NATO on that occasion: ‘Energy security, NATO expansion eastward, a new strategic policy, defense planning – Poland has a substantial list of tasks to engage in. It must be remembered that this anniversary summit is to launch certain work and that will be Poland’s main challenge, for its diplomacy and all other representatives. They should work in unison. Meeting with president Obama specifically at this summit is not the most important thing, but for NATO to start working on its own problems.’

MP Jaroslaw Gowin from the Civic Platform (PO) said on his part that PM Donald Tusk will most probably speak personally with US President Barack Obama during the meeting with the Czech EU presidency: ‘It’s important to know the stand of the US president, especially on the anti-missile shield, energy security. I personally am slightly worried with the new tone of the Washington administration in its policy regarding Russia, or countries such as Ukraine, Belarus and I suspect these issues shall betackled by premier Tusk in his talks with president Obama.’

The European Union summit is scheduled for April 5th in Prague, the Czech capital.
