Soldiers of the Polish military mission in Afghanistan have assumed command over the international airport in Kabul.

The six month assignment comes within the NATO operation there. The 70 strong group of flight controllers, navigators, technicians and military police are now responsible for the airport’s logistics, security and freight organization. Kabul international airport handles some 300 flights daily.

Colonel Leszek Dubaj, the new airport commander, stressed his men will not only be entrusted with tasks falling under the NATO mission, but shall also be assisting civilian passengers at terminals. Besides military planes and helicopters, Kabul airport caters to flights by four Afghan airlines and carriers from India, Turkey and Azerbaijan.
