• Easter charity egg collection in Warsaw
  • 05.04.2009

Palm Sunday is the time of the Easter charity egg collection in Warsaw.

The action, first launched nine years ago, is organised by Warsaw’s S.O.S. Food Bank Foundation. Volunteers are turning up at the capital’s most known and favoured churches, such as the Church of the Holy Cross and Saint Anne’s Church, both in the city center, or Saint Florian’s and St. Michael’s Cathedral in the Praga district.

Joanna Blanik, from Poland’s Food Bank Federation, has said that all the churches joining the action have been listed on the website of the S.O.S. Food Bank Foundation for those would like to participate in the initiative: "We’d like to invite you to come to these churches, and we encourage you to take part in the food collection and to share what you have with others before Easter."

The collected eggs are added to food packages and Easter breakfasts for the needy. The event was initially held in two churches and began expanding over the years to reach 16 this year. The charity event has become very popular and is seen as a symbol of Easter and solidarity among people. Last year, almost 7,000 eggs were collected in the action.
