Twelve Poles have been evacuated from the quake stricken region of Abruzzo, central Italy.

They were taken to Rome and next to Poland. Polish consul in Rome Jerzy Adamczyk said diplomatic services did their best to locate all Polish citizens in the danger area: ‘There is a degree of chaos still there. That is why information we’ve gathered pertains to Polish citizens who expressed desire to return home. We had to take care of them as they lost all belongings.’

The consular department of the Polish embassy in Rome is in continuous contact with Italian authorities, both central and local. A special round-the-clock info line has been set up at the Foreign Ministry in Warsaw. So far, there has been no information about any Polish fatalities as a result of the earthquake around L’Aquila, the capital of the Abruzzo province.

Information to date speaks of 207 people dead, 1500 wounded and possibly some 100 thousand left without shelter due to the threat of their homes collapsing.
