The Warsaw Stock Exchange turns 18 today. The first day of trading to take place at the newly-opened Warsaw bourse was on the 16th April 1991.

5 companies started trade there on its opening day, with a turnover of 1900 zloty and 112 transactions being made. Presently 373 companies trade on the exchange, including 25 foreign companies, as well as public and corporate bonds, shares and currencies.

Investors make over 410,000 transactions every day on the bourse, showing that the Warsaw Stock Exchange has truly come of age.

In the last years the bourse has become one of the top-ranking markets in terms of debut companies, and the first quarter of 2009 showed that it is the leader among European indexes in terms of start-up numbers.
