• Epiphany to become a public holiday?
  • 17.04.2009

The Mayor of Łódź, Jerzy Kropiwnicki, is handed over a petition to the speaker of the Sejm, Poland's lower house, on making the feast of Epiphany on the 6th January a national holiday.

Talking to Polish Radio, the Łódź mayor said that he had managed to gather over a million signatures so far, with more coming in every day:

"According to the law you only need 100,000 signatures, but we wanted to surpass that number so that everyone who signed the petition would have the satisfaction of wanting to change the work law so that Epiphany would once again be a public holiday, and their signatures weren't wasted: every one of them went to the higher echelons of the Polish lower house."

Jerzy Kropiwnicki also said that he is hoping for wide-ranging support for the initaitive, as over a million signatures from adult Poles should mean something to the Polish members of parliament.
