Today is Earth Day, a global celebration devoted to showing appreciation for our planet and highlighting the need to preserve the environment.

This year’s event is held under the slogan “Protect the Earth with Energy”.

To mark the occasion, Warsaw Mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, and the city hall’s eco-team, along with students most committed to saving the environment, will take part in a tree-planting event held at the capital’s Kabacki forest, following diverse environment-oriented field activities.

More celebrations have been planned for the weekend, at Warsaw’s Pole Mokotowskie park, held under the honorary patronage of the Environment Minister. A line-up of events taking place this Sunday includes workshops, conferences, contests and exhibitions. This time, the conventional stands have been replaced with many innovative forms of education that would acquaint youngsters with simple ways of saving energy. Also, the Ministry of Environment has prepared a host of attractions for the day, such as a play, concert, and a variety of games, to raise children’s environmental awareness through entertainment.

Earth Day was first celebrated in Poland in 1990.
