Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko
Special celebrations are held at a famous Warsaw parish to honor the name's day of Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko, murdered 25 years ago by communist functionaries, and expected to be declared blessed by the Catholic Church soon.
Every year since the famous Solidarity chaplain's tragic death, St. Stanisław Kostka parish in Warsaw honors his name's day with special celebrations. Thousands of people arrive from all over Poland to pay tribute to the martyr at his tomb.
The Primate of Poland's Roman Catholic Church will lead the Mass this year, on the 25th anniversary of the priests' murder. 'We invited priests from all over the archdiocese to pray together also for the quick beatification of Fr. Jerzy Popiełuszko,' said Fr. Zdzisław Malacki of the St. Stanisław Kostka parish.
As in the previous year, the elderly Mother of the murdered priest is expected to attend the celebrations.
