April 29th marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp in Dachau.

It was the first such camp established in March 1933, barely two months after Hitler came to power in Germany. Only in April 1945, in the final days of World War Two, was Dachau liberated by the approaching American forces. Camp documents show that out of the 206 thousand inmates 30 thousand had perished during its 12 years of notorious operation. One third of the murdered inmates were Poles. Current research revealed the number of prisoners killed in Dachau could be much larger, reaching up to 150 thousand victims.

In 1984 the premises of the former Nazi concentration camp in Dachau were placed on the UNESCO list of protected historical sites.
