The head of the European Parliament Hans Gert Poettering said that Europe cannot rest but has to continue talking about values which it respects. Addressing the delegates at the European People’s Party Congress he said the party is not only a geographical and political set but a community based on democracy, observance of law and solidarity.
A member of the EP since 1979 Poettering said that 30 years ago nobody would have believed that such a congress would take place in Warsaw. 'This vision this dream has come true. We should be telling this to people in Europe. We are grateful for the fact that, luckily, we are united in the European Union' he said.
He also informed the delegates that among the guests of the Congress is the Belorussian opposition leader Aleksandr Milinkevich and stressed that an EU summit devoted to the Eastern Partnership project will take place in Prague next week with the participation of a representative of Belarus. (di)
