• EC prognosis for Polish economy 'not realistic', says expert
  • 04.05.2009

The European Commission has published a pessimistic prognosis report about Polish economy. It anticipates a "mild recession", the fall of the GDP by 1.4% and the rise of the budget deficit to 6.6% of the GDP.

All this is because of a general EU-wide situation. Recession affects large economies and Poland will feel repercussions of that, say European Commission experts. Due to a predicted large budget deficit, the European Commission will most probably intervene to punish Poland, said Joaquin Almunia, EU commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs.

Polish economist Ryszard Petru says the EC prognosis does not seem realistic. 'I think this prognosis is based on outdated data from the beginning of this year. It doesn't take into account how the dynamics of the decrease have slowed down recently. So hopefully this pessimistic prognosis is just wrong,' he said.

The situation is much worse in most of other EU states than it is in Poland, stressed Ryszard Petru.
