Irena Sendler has been posthumously granted the Audrey Hepburn Humanitarian Award.
The Foundation named in honor of the late American actress and UNICEF ambassador presents the award to persons and organizations merited in helping children. In its citation the Audrey Hepburn Foundation recalled that Irena Sendler’s heroic efforts saved two and a half thousand Jewish children during the Nazi German occupation of Poland in World War Two. Quoted has also been a statement by Piotr Kadlcik, the chairman of the Association of Jewish Communities in Poland, who said that Irena Sendler saved the future of the Jewish nation.
The award has been received in Berlin on behalf of the Sendler family by Poland’s ambassador to Germany Marek Prawda.
