• President stays home to avoid conflict with government

The Presidential Office in Warsaw has issued a communiqué announcing president Lech Kaczynski’s resignation from attending the EU summit in Prague, starting Thursday.

The decision came after the president had been acquainted with the official stand of the government on the presentation of the Eastern Partnership program, which is to have its launch during the summit in the Czech capital.

Marek Saryusz-Wolski, an expert on EU affairs, considers the move appropriate: “The Eastern Partnership is a government proposed concept, so it would be strange if it were presented by the President. I understand that the Premier is going to Prague with the Foreign Minister. This Polish-Swedish initiative is very good and has been accepted by Europe. I think it is substantial that the authors present it personally.”

According to the Presidential Office communiqué, Lech Kaczynski has left the issue of representing Poland to the PM in an attempt to avoid any conflict with the government over the matter.
