Renault Formula 1 manager Eric Boullier has spoken at length about Robert Kubica's recovery, noting that “it's all about him developing his feeling again in his right hand.”

Krakow-born Kubica, a sensation in Poland, was hospitalised in February after a serious crash at the Ronde di Andorra rally in Italy, which at one point, was thought to have threatened his racing career.

He finally emerged from hospital in Pietra Ligure in late April, and he is now recuperating at his home in Monaco.

“I spent an hour on the phone with him this week," Boullier said at a press conference in Istanbul, in the lead up to this weekend's Turkish Grand Prix.

“He is obviously very relieved to be back home and relieved to get back to a normal life, even if he has to work every day on his rehabilitation,” the manager revealed.

“He is working six or seven hours per day,” Boullier reported, adding that “we should know more by mid-June about what to expect, and when.”

Boullier did not gloss over the seriousness of the accident.

“His injuries were quite bad. Bones and muscles are quite easy to fix, if I may say so, but nerves, it's a different story. You need to be cautious in their development, which is why they need to take time.

“It needs to be done and handled properly.”
Kubica is set to enter a special rehabilitation programme at a clinic run by Renault consultant Dr Riccardo Ceccarelli.

“We all miss Robert,” said world champion Fernando Alonso, a close friend of Kubica, was also at the conference.

"He is doing well, although it is not that easy for him to recover from all the injuries. But I'm sure he will be here soon, maybe this year, and no doubts next year.” (nh)
